What We Do
If it isn't clear from the aims and objectives in our constitution we basically organise and encourage activities that involve the genres of sci-fi and fantasy (which some might refer to as speculative fiction). This includes watching movies and TV shows, reading books, going on trips and (this one is very important) spending a lot of time in the pub over a few pints and being very silly (which maybe related to the pints?).
To be more specific, we organise trips to the local cinema and also show films in one of the lecture theatres on campus (ie ALT1). In the past we've shown all manner of classic films like Donnie Darko, The Terminator and The Crow plus some more recent films like Star Trek (boldly rebooting where no man has rebooted before), X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
If books are more your cup of tea, we also have a library of approximately 1500 books that members can borrow. You can search any of the books via the website as due to space constraints the library is stored in some cupboards which don't lend themselves for browsing. And if you find something tickles your fancy you can reserve it on the website too.
For the more brave and adventurous of you, we also organise trips off campus. This includes trips to London for guided tours of the best shops to buy your books/films/comics from. Or to sci-fi/fantasy conventions. But if that sounds a little too much to start with, we also meet a bit more closer to home every Thursday at a local pub called The Alma Mata for a drink and a chat.
Generally though we are a very enthusiastic and friendly society and you'll meet lots of fun and interesting people who share an interest in sci-fi and fantasy. Plus, we hope you'll expand your tastes and discover some sci-fi you might not have otherwise encountered.
