Firstly- please note that the below are only proposals so feel free to add, delete, etc. any that you like or dislike or I haven't thought of for next term. Best as always! Me xx I propose 1) A trip to laserquest (provided that there is one in the near vicinity of Staines or London) or similar in the second Saturday of term (mainly because it is thought that it may be too cold for a huge waterfight, and laserquest is probably the next best thing.
The nearest one is in Guildford...or it was a couple of years ago when
GameSoc last went. GameSoc used to go and do Laserquest (or similiar) a lot
you see... even got a corperate account at the Quaser in Slough (which no
longer exists). Maybe talk to them and organise a joint venture?
If something is organised, booking the entire venue is the best way to do it
from GameSoc's experience. You get the entire arena to yourselves for a
couple of games (any more and you'll die of exhaustion). And you won't end
up getting your butt kicked by some snotty nosed 8 year old or the guys who
spend every waking hour playing laserquest.
2) A disco of some description at the students union, with some sort of sci-fi related fancy dress theme- I'm thinking around halloween- may be a come as your fave sci-fi or fantasy (is afficionado the right word?) character. Basically a night where we can all have a laugh and act crazy (wait a moment I do the second of those things all the time- hmmm suspicious...)...
I believe the way this normally works, is that the society foots the bill
for everything - security, bar staff, DJs etc... and then gets the ticket
sales. Which sounds great in theory, but I'm not aware of any society run
event making a profit. Ever.
RockSoc's rock nights in TW20s might have been the exception, but they're on
a much smaller scale.
3) IFIS christmas dinner- Chris T, I hope you'll be willing to help me out planning this (huge endearing smile and much fluttering of eyelashes...)
Sure. It's really not as complicated as it sounds though :)
4) vis a vis films- possibly to include a Best of thing for X-files, Firefly etc. because showing the same series every week will 1 take too long and 2 not be to everyone's taste, and we'll want to show other things as well of course.
What other things would fit in to the hour slot before the film though?
Most TV shows are either 30 or 60 minutes long so are ideal for that slot.
Rather than just showing one series, we could just showcase various TV
series in the first term. Broaden peoples' experiences of what
sci-fi/fantasy TV there is. And then in the second (and third?) term
concentrate on maybe one or two that everyone liked the look of?
Based on what happened this past year, some people will show up regardless
of what we're showing, so as long as people know what times we start, we'll
get some bums on seats. We'd just have to make sure we start moderately on
time for the TV slot so as to not cut into the film slot too much.

I'm sure this is a silly idea, but If we're doing TV Sci-Fi, we could
pick a theme, and show episodes of a variety of sci-fi shows doing that
theme... an obvious one would be "Ground Hog Day" for example, Star trek
has done it at least once, SG1 did it, X files did it, Farscape did it,
etc. Maybe you guys can think of a better theme though ;-)
Other obvious sci-fi clich themes include: Bodyswap, getting stuck in
an alternate reality, main character becoming out of phase with reality
so only weird people and the audience (wait, this is IFIS, so I guess
they count as weird people too) can see them etc...

That sounds like a very fine idea (although the groundhog day one might end
up in some kind of paradoxical realm - "Wait a minute, this plot seems
familiar. Didn't we just do this?")
You also can't forget the "stuck in the holodeck" episodes - they're always
good for a giggle.
Love,
Lizz
(suddenly realising how long it's been since I last watched any Trek...)
