THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE COLLECTIVE.
Or at least, one of 'em, and apparently nominated mouthpiece of the Elder
Things - the strange post-university beings that you may or may not have
noticed hanging around the place. You might even be one.
WE ARE MANY. WE ARE LISTENING.
Anyway, there's an ancient and venerable tradition of IFIS members past and
present going to a pub on Thursday nights for general socialising, chatting,
hanging out and imbibing beverages. In recent times this has happened at the
Beehive. Unfortunately the Beehive has, in the view of some, become less
desirable as a venue - too expensive, too limited a menu, too few tables,
etc.
This in mind, a change of venue is proposed. In the interests of pissing
people off and provoking some kind of dissent (and thus conversation and
discussion on the matter), I unilaterally declare that the Thursday socials
shall now occur at the Railway in Egham at some point in the evening - maybe
around 8pm or so. The Railway does a range of food, not too pricey, a fair
amount of space, and I like it because it's near the train station which
means I don't have to trudge up and down Egham Hill. This last point is
important to me because I am lazy and selfish.
If you think that sounds like a good idea then say so, then turn up at the
pub so I can be gleeful at bending people to my will. If you don't agree,
say so, and make a case for your preferred venue. Everyone else, please
state your allegiance either way so that those malleable types who are
influenced by the opinions of their more decisive peers can follow the
majority to wherever it is they're going.
Or just be apathetic and don't reply because you're not really interested in
this "social" thing or you have better things to be doing with your time.
It's up to you.
Laters,
Steve

1) There's no outdoor space for the summer (I know this isn't an issue right
now)
2) Parking - in that there isn't very much and what there is can be a right
pain to get into and out of depending on where you actually manage to park.
As I've already discovered you still have to pay at the station car park no
matter what time of day/night you arrive.
The second point is fairly minor (other car parks in Egham could be used)
but I do think the first point has to be considered.

There is car park right across the road from the station that is free in
the evenings.

Er...there is. There's an enormous garden out the back. But you have to
traipse out past the loos and the carpark to get to it though.

Ah - not having seen any signs in the pub and only taking a quick look after
I parked the car last week, I didn't realise that was out there.
In that case, I have no issues with the Railway.

Isn't it, in fact, "the biggest beer garden in Egham"?

Yes, that's the plan. We should (if we can grab the seats) be in the left
hand section near the front.

As a fellow Elder Thing, I should mention that it is traditional on
these occasions for a duly anointed scouting party to crawl the local
taverns and return with a suggestion for our new meeting place.
However, pending such an expedition, I provisionally agree with
Comrade Steve's suggestion.
