The second part of the original Earthsea Trilogy, this novel focuses on the Kargad Empire, a warlike nation to the east of the wizard Ged's homeland of Gont. The girl Tenar is worshipped as a goddess, and is raised in a temple on the island of Atuan. Her world is turned upside-down, however, by the arrival of a treasure-seeking young Ged. She must choose between the life of this stranger and the ways of her people.
