Cable TV news...

Hi,
Just some tv news etc...

The Dune mini-series is about to be shown on the Sci-Fi channel. It
looks good, has any one watched it (it's been on video for some time)?

Also, if you are a Tenchi Muyo fan like me, Cartoon network will be
airing "Tenchi in Tokyo". [If you haven't seen the Tenchi Muyo (OVA) series
- it's worth watching (it's manga/anime series)].

Well either that was a blatant bit of bragging, or it shouldn't have gone to
chat. I'll be generous and say the latter :-)
Anyway I certainly won't be watching it. I can't be bothered to read the
books and thought the film was a bit rubbish, so I don't think imagine I'll
be missing much...

Neither actually, just a passing comment meant to say : we shall find out
soon whether the critics were right/wrong when it arrives on telly :) I'll
probably watch it seeing as how I've read all the books and really need to
start piecing together some of the things visually.

Actually, does anyone know whether the starship troopers:roughnecks cartoons
will be shown over here?

I've already seen some of them on I think it was Sky1 some months back. They
were on at some Godawful time of the morning which meant I only saw them if
I woke up far too early. I'm sure they'll be repeated soon.

I've got a DVD of the first 5 episodes if you want to borrow it Asan.
The soundtrack is rather nice, and the cast list on the film is a heaven for "spot the
actor/actress" types like me. The number of people in Dune who are also in Twin Peaks is
(perhaps not surprisingly) very large. Even Alia went on to be famous....

Oh! it's Dune you're talking about... I was abit confused as you might have

It took a very long time for me to get over watching the first part of it. I couldn't watch
any more after that. I am reliably informed that it get's worse after the first one too.
On the good side it does include parts of the book that the film skips over but it's
not worth putting up with the rest of it just to see them.

Why has all of the cast caught bad acting disease?
Why sets and costume design stolen from Star Wars?
What's with Paul having the voice when he meets the Reverend Mother?
Why is Duke Leto less emotional than a Vulcan?
Why did I spend some of my life watching this cr4p?

I guess they figured that the film failed to bugg3r it up so they tried again with the
mini series.

Thanks for reminding me, I'm supposed to be passing the DVD back to
it's owner tonight.

I thought it was quite good. It's probably been around 15 years since
I read the book, so I can't comment on it's accuracy, but it's much
closer than the film. (The wierding way being a kind of martial
art rather than groovy tech weapon).

I had two real complaints (only one serious)...

The actor that played Guerney just couldn't act to save his life.
I assume he was paid the lion's share of the production costs or
something. He pretty much ruined every scene he was in.

The less serious complaint, was that the Sadukar uniforms made
them all look like raving woofters. I can't think of a
single elite force in history that looked more effeminate.
(Still I guess it's one way of striking fear into your
enemies...)

Well, despite what other people may say, I actually quite liked it... If
you can excuse the odd cheesy effect (it's made for TV, not for cinema, so
less effects budget), and remember that it's not *meant* to be the same as
the David Lynch version then it's not bad at all...
